In some states, the animals are already sold on a contract basis with the packers or sent to the feed-less and sold through the packers. Van Anne said the number of days of delay depends on the amount of feed, but regardless of whether the cattle arrive late. If the yield is lower and the cattle are gone for a week, they can be delayed two or three weeks and still be sold if they are scheduled, she said. In other cases, if they are not sold in time for the first day or two weeks of the season, delays may occur.
The costs of delays quickly add up to expenses that quickly eat into remaining profit margins, she said, and those expenses quickly reduce the remaining profit margin.
Proceeds will go to the Nebraska Cattlemen's Relief Fund, which supports producers affected by the storm. Contact the manufacturer for more information on the proper disposal of corpses and for any other questions about the fund.
As for the inventory, Van Anne said calves with large joints or swollen umbilical cord showed clear signs of a problem, manufacturers should recognise the problem and visit their veterinarian when treatment is available. As the breeding season is not far away, you should also check with the veterinarian if there are no problems.
